Certificate in Oral Health Education

The Certificate in Oral Health Education is a qualification suitable for qualified dental nurses who are required to provide oral health advice to patients under the direction of a dentist, therapist or hygienist.

In order to undertake the qualification, a dental nurse must:

Course Requirements

Candidates must complete a Record of Experience containing:

Part A: Log sheets

The care of ten individuals, seen on at least two occasions is required and you must target at least six of the specified patient groups.

The setting should normally be within your own place of work but may be elsewhere if appropriate to the particular patient group.

Part B: Expanded Case Studies

Candidates must complete two case studies from the log sheets

  • one involving a child
  • one involving an adult
Each case study must be approximately 2000 words

Part C: Display/Exhibition

Candidates must use the set proforma to plan, produce and evaluate a display/exhibition which ideally, but not necessarily, should be in their place of work.

Candidates also sit a final examination comprising written and oral components.

Certificate of Competency in Advanced Oral Heath

This course combines the Certificate in Oral Health with competencies in Fluoride Application and Basic Periodontal Examination. Candidates will complete the Cert OHE (as detailed above) and if successful, will then be granted access to training for the further competencies. The combined course is 12 months in duration. Candidates must be qualified and registered with the GDC and have a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience in the dental environment.

Certificate of Competency in Impression Taking

This course is open to dental nurses who are qualified and registered with the GDC. Training is provided in impression taking for the following treatments:

Specific training is not provided for impressions relating to fixed or removal prosthetics however candidates can go on to have further training within their workplace if this is appropriate. Courses run twice a year in various locations in the North West.
