Certificate in Oral Health Education
(Fluoride Application and Plaque Indices)
Online Programme Application Details
The Certificate in Oral Health Education (Fluoride Application and Plaque Indices) is available online starting in August each year. To apply for this course in the first instance, please complete the online application form. Once we have received this, you will be contacted by a representative from SMG Training for a brief telephone interview. This interview is informal and serves to ensure that you have all the support structures in place to successfully undertake this course.
Dental nurses must meet the following criteria in order to access this programme:
- Hold a recognised dental nurse qualification (SMG Training does not accept applications from dental nurses who are registered but not qualified)
- Hold current GDC registration
- Be able to access a wide range of patients with different Oral Health needs, therefore needing full practice support.
- Provide the name and details of a suitably qualified mentor — dentist / hygienist / therapist or OHE qualified dental nurse.
At this time, we are not offering the Fluoride and Plaque Indices components individually. The course is a full programme.
Once accepted the course fee will be required to access the programme. The course fees are £500 for the registration fee, course materials and full access to online, telephone and email support. This fee is due prior to commencement. The exam fees, (payable to the NEBDN) are £175 (subject to change) and are due two months prior to your chosen exam date. It is also recommended that you purchase the textbook:
Advanced Dental Nursing, 2nd Edition
Robert Ireland
In addition to the online theory work, you will be expected to put together a Record of Experience detailing the provision of oral health advice to a variety of patients. The deadline for completion of this is two months prior to your chosen exam date.
Once you are registered you will be given a password to allow access to the course material. The course is set out in modules. Four modules will be completed in preparation for the examination and the fifth will be completed while awaiting results. The fifth module is Fluoride Application and Plaque Indices and does not carry an exam. This module is separate to the Certificate in Oral Health Education and can be excluded if you wish. At the end of each module is an assessment which must be completed to a satisfactory standard to allow progression to the next module. At the end of module 4 there will be a mock examination. Within each module there are revision activities. These are not formally assessed however you can email in these assessments for marking if you prefer.
The course can be undertaken over 7 months or 13 months. This will be decided by you as it will depend how often you are running oral health sessions in the practice. The initial programme will be set over 7 months however can be extended if necessary. During the programme, you will be contacted on a monthly basis for an update on your progress, or at shorter time intervals if necessary. The NEBDN examination is held at dental hospitals around the country in March and September. You will be advised of your examination location before the course starts. The exam consists of a written component and a viva (oral).
To assist in your studies you will be asked to provide the contact details of a suitable mentor within the dental practice. This person can be a hygienist / therapist, dental surgeon or a OHE qualified dental nurse. This person will be expected to work with you to provide practical support throughout the programme.
This course also qualifies for 45 hours of verifiable CPD.
